Frequently asked questions

Can I message any Instagram user?+

No. You can only message users who have first messaged your account, replied to one of your stories, or mentioned your account. Cold outbound DMs from a business account to users you have no prior interaction with are not permitted through the API.

What is Instagram's 24-hour messaging window?+

Once a user messages you, replies to a story, or mentions your account, a 24-hour window opens for free-form replies including promotional content. After the window closes, you can only send specific human-agent message tags as defined by Meta.

Do I need a Business or Creator account?+

Yes. The Instagram Messaging API only works with Business or Creator accounts linked to a Facebook Page. Personal accounts cannot connect to WellPlan or other DM management tools. Switching account type is free and reversible inside the Instagram app.

Can comments on my posts trigger workflows?+

Yes. WellPlan can listen for comments containing specific keywords on your Instagram posts and Reels, then trigger an automated DM to the commenter. This is a common growth pattern often called comment-to-DM automation.
